Both the front and back cover artwork were inspired by the song 'Watching the Detectives', a song about a boy feeling ignored by his girlfriend who only watches detective shows. At the time of the original UK release of My Aim Is True, the song was not included on the album but instead was put out as a single. The US version of the album added the song to its track listing as the last song on Side One. Subsequent releases (particularly those on CD) have included it at the end of the album.
